RCC Ethics Framework
Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Recovery Coaches Canada (RCC) Ethics Framework is to establish a clear, values-based foundation for the ethical conduct of recovery coaches across Canada.
This framework was developed to ensure that recovery coaches are guided by principles of integrity, respect, competence, and accountability—and that those seeking support can do so with confidence and trust.
By outlining ethical expectations and standards, the framework promotes professionalism, protects the dignity and autonomy of clients, and supports the evolution of recovery coaching as a recognized, ethical, and effective profession.
It serves not only as a compass for individual coaches, but as a collective commitment to doing no harm, fostering inclusion, and empowering recovery in all its forms.
Recovery Coaches Canada wishes to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the following members who assisted in the creation of this document. We are so grateful to them for the countless hours they put into the research and development of these standards for all our benefit.

Ethics Framework
Introduction
Recovery Coaching in Canada is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards to ensure the well-being and empowerment of individuals seeking recovery. This Ethics Framework outlines the principles and guidelines that guide Recovery Coaches in their professional conduct.
1. Integrity
Recovery Coaches commit to acting with honesty, transparency, and authenticity in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders. They avoid engaging in deceptive practices and maintain the trust and confidence of those they serve.
2. Respect
Recovery Coaches demonstrate respect for the dignity, autonomy, and cultural diversity of individuals in recovery. They acknowledge and honor the unique experiences and perspectives of clients, fostering an environment that values inclusivity and equality.
3. Confidentiality
Maintaining the confidentiality of client information is paramount. Recovery Coaches respect the privacy of individuals in recovery and adhere to legal and ethical standards regarding the collection, storage, and sharing of sensitive information.
4. Competence
Recovery Coaches continually strive to enhance their professional competence through education, training, and supervision. They acknowledge the limits of their expertise and refer clients to appropriate resources when necessary, ensuring the highest quality of care.
5. Boundaries
Recovery Coaches establish and maintain clear and ethical boundaries with clients, avoiding dual relationships that may compromise professional judgment. They prioritize the well-being of clients and maintain objectivity in their coaching relationships.
6. Informed Consent
Recovery Coaches obtain informed consent from clients, clearly outlining the coaching process, goals, and potential outcomes. Clients have the right to make informed decisions about their recovery journey, and coaches respect and support these choices.
7. Non-Discrimination
Recovery Coaches actively work against discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other characteristic. They create an inclusive and supportive environment that embraces diversity.
8. Conflict of Interest
Recovery Coaches avoid conflicts of interest that may compromise their ability to prioritize the best interests of clients. They disclose any potential conflicts and take appropriate steps to address and mitigate them.
9. Professional Responsibility
Recovery Coaches recognize their responsibility to the profession and society. They contribute to the advancement of recovery coaching, adhere to relevant laws and regulations, and engage in ongoing self-reflection to ensure ethical practice.
10. Client Welfare
The well-being of clients is the primary focus. Recovery Coaches prioritize the safety and health of individuals in recovery, advocating for their needs and empowering them to achieve their goals.
